Wanda Fay Matheson

Wanda Fay Matheson, age 91 passed this life on August 3, 2021 at home with her daughter Debbie by her side in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She was born on November 11, 1929 in Vanoss, Oklahoma to her parents Marvin Jones and Rachel (McNair) Jones. Wanda was the middle child of six siblings whom she loved dearly. Her love of family was undeniable and amazing to witness. Wanda married the love of her life, J.B. Matheson whom she has spent 57 years with. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend. Wanda was always a hard worker. She never believed in the word "bored". If you said that you were bored in front of her, the next thing you knew you were sitting at a TV tray licking green stamps and putting them into the stamp books! She retired from Perryton Independent School District in 1986 where she worked in the High School Library for almost 30 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Perryton, Texas. Wanda and J.B. moved to Amarillo, Texas in 1987 to be close to their kids and Holly, their only grandchild. About 19 months ago Wanda moved again to be close to family, her granddaughter and grandson, Jianni. She always took pride in making sure Sunday dinner was on the table at noon and you better be there! Family was so important to her that this was a beautiful tradition she made. She also took pride in making sure every holiday was filled with love, beautiful decorations and homemade treats. Other things that Wanda enjoyed were baking, maintaining her garden, and visiting with friends and family while drinking coffee. She also enjoyed sports. She was a huge fan of the NBA team The Dallas Mavericks and was also a Dallas Cowboys fan. Wanda had many friends in her life and was always active, she loved playing Bridge with her monthly club and foursomes in between. She went to water aerobics three times a week until she was 85 years old. Wanda lived into her 90s because she was the strongest woman in comparison to the average. Her determination proved to be just as equal. She was the strongest woman that most knew. Although she was very reserved, she was fun and dignified. She was always confident and stable. She survived many near death experiences including being held at gunpoint, taken to her and her husband's bank to withdraw all of their funds, and then stuffed into a trunk and driven many hours away and then left alone in an unknown location. Wanda's strength was a large part of her personality and her self motivation was admirable! She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, J.B. Matheson and her son Monte Matheson. Wanda is survived by her daughter Debbie Matheson Ellis of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; granddaughter Holly Zapata; Great Grandson Jianni Zapata; grandson in law Damian Zapata all of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; sister Helen Allard of Edmond, Oklahoma; along with many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. There will be a celebration of life service held on Tuesday, August 10th at 2pm at the Arrow Springs Chapel in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Pastor Mike Harris will be officiating.
